Hari Jones, curator and assistant director of the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum, talks about the contributions of African American Women during the War.
Dr. Ira Rutkow discusses how the Civil War changed medicine and surgery. Dr. Rutkow is the author of "Bleeding Blue and Gray: Civil War Surgery and the Evolution of American Medicine."
Author Kendall Gott talks about the Civil War battle of Fort Donelson, which was a pivotal victory for the Union in 1862. Mr. Gott is a professor at the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center and the author of “Where the South Lost the War: An Analysis of the Fort Henry-Fort Donelson Campaign, February 1862.” This event took place at the Fort Donelson National Battlefield Visitor Center in Dover, Tennessee.
Author and professor David Mindell talks about the technology of the USS Monitor, and the experience of its crew aboard one of the first ironclads. He spoke in early March at the Mariners’ Museum annual Civil War Navy Conference. This year’s conference marked the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Hampton Roads where, for the first time, ironclad warships met in battle.
David Gerleman, an assistant editor at the Papers of Abraham Lincoln project, talks about some of the ideas and suggestions offered by Northerners for fighting the Confederate ironclad, the Merrimac. History professor Victoria Ott talks about the views of young, upper-class women of the South toward the North and President Abraham Lincoln. She spoke at the Lincoln Forum Symposium in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
The Civil War Battle of Shiloh took place April 6th and 7th, 1862 in Hardin County, Tennessee, and resulted in a Union victory over Confederate forces. We visited Shiloh National Military Park, where Stacy Allen, the Park's Chief Ranger, talked about some of the artifacts on display in the Visitor Center, including battle flags, arms and munitions, and personal items from soliders who fought in the battle. He also took us behind the scenes to the Park’s storage facility, where he showed us two rare Civil War tents.
Historians and authors discuss the Battle of Shiloh, which was fought 150 years ago in Hardin County, Tennessee on April 6-7, 1862. The battle resulted in a Union victory over Confederate forces attempting to defend two major western railroads servicing the strategically important Mississippi Valley region. Nearly 110,000 troops took part in the fighting, which produced almost 24,000 casualties, making it the bloodiest battle to that point in U.S. history.
Author and University of Pennsylvania history professor Stephanie McCurry speaks about her book, “Confederate Reckoning: Power and Politics in the Civil War South.” She says the South sowed the seeds of its demise in creating a regime that excluded white women and slaves, who together comprised a majority of the population.
