C-SPAN Radio's Supreme Court Historic Oral Argument: “FCC V. Pacifica Foundation” (1978)

On C-SPAN Radio’ s historic Supreme Court Oral Argument this week:

On January 10, 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear the oral argument in “Federal Communications Commission v. Fox Television Stations”—a case about whether the FCC’s standards for indecency on television are too vague to be constitutional.

And on December 17, on C-SPAN Radio’s historic Supreme Court oral argument, a case cited in “FCC v. Fox TV.”  From 1978:
“Federal Communications Commission, petitioner  v. Pacifica Foundation, respondent.”

During a mid-afternoon broadcast, a New York radio station aired George Carlin's monologue, "Filthy Words”---speaking the words that could not be said on the public airwaves. The station warned listeners that the monologue included "sensitive language which might be regarded as offensive to some." The Federal Communications Commission received a complaint from a man who said that he had heard the broadcast while driving with his young son.

FBI Director Discusses Surveillance Authority

FBI Director Robert Mueller urged Congress on Wednesday to renew wide-ranging surveillance authority to thwart terrorism plots like the latest one in which an al-Qaida-engineered explosive device was to have been detonated on a U.S. bound airline flight. Mueller told the House Judiciary Committee the FBI is examining the device and said the scheme hatched in Yemen demonstrates that it's essential for Congress to reauthorize counter-terrorism tools enacted in 2008. Some of these programs expire at year-end.

Melvin Urofsky talks about his book, Louis D. Brandeis: A Life . Louis Brandeis was 59 years old when he was named to the U.S. Supreme Court by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. Prior to that he had been instrumental in the development of the Federal Reserve and the Federal Trade Commission. Professor Urofsky discussed Justice Brandeis' early years in Louisville and his leadership in the American Zionist movement. He was the first Jewish member of the Court. Justice Brandeis remained on the court until 1939. When the new Supreme Court building opened in 1935, Justice Brandeis refused to move into his new chambers, saying that the courtroom in the Capitol was more symbolic of smaller government.

American Artifacts: 1297 Magna Carta

 After a year of conservation treatments, the National Archives is returning a 1297 copy of the Magna Carta to public display. One of only four originals from 1297, the document is owned by Carlyle Group founder David Rubenstein but is on permanent loan to the archives. Partnering with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the archives designed a custom case to protect the fragile document.  In this event, the new encasement is unveiled and details of the project are discussed.
